Dancing Kites Creative Learning books are designed to make the world of words and imagination accessible to children with dyslexia. They use words and illustrations together in a fun way to encourage and inspire children to read and write.
The rhymes and rhythms of the poems help children to remember what they have read. The illustrations, together with supporting interactive activities, engage their attention and reinforce learning.
My son suffers from dyslexia. He attended Corinna Shepherd’s Chilterns IDL Dyslexia Centre for one year to help him with his reading and spelling. When Corinna started to introduce her illustrated poems as part of my son’s lessons, he became much more motivated to learn. There was a marked difference in attitude from when I dropped him off (very reluctant) to when I picked him up (very enthusiastic).
I am sure that the use of rhyming couplets, together with illustrations, help draw my son into the words through the world of imagination. The language is carefully chosen to be appropriate to a specific reading and spelling age. The subjects appeal to a wide range of ages and the layouts work for dyslexic children with visual processing difficulties. Also, having supporting activities reinforces learning in a fun way and appeals to children who learn by doing, not just reading.
There is little currently on the market written specifically to help and inspire dyslexic children, especially from the earliest age. Corinna’s books will, I am sure, fill that gap in the market. I, for one, look forward to seeing them on the shelves and buying them to use with my son. Why don’t schools have such books?

I have been fortunate enough to have been involved in testing concepts for the new Dancing Kites Creative Learning books and techniques. I am delighted to say that Corinna’s poetry, illustrations and interactive exercises have been little short of a miracle with the children.
Whilst the regular curriculum work can appear repetitious and a bit dull, the poetry and general creative approach always lifts the children’s spirits and successfully engages them in reading and writing activities that they often struggle with and resist.
The combination of fun illustrations, imaginative poetry and creative learning exercises engages the children every time and is a guarantee that they will always go home with a smile on their face and having learned something new.

Corinna has devised her methods as a result of several years of working with problematic readers and spellers. The process gets down to the core of the problem. It is simple and proven as effective. Why did no-one think of it before?!
I thoroughly recommend Dancing Kites Creative Learning books by Corinna Shepherd as a valuable aid for dyslexic pupils.

My son struggles with dyslexia, which affects his reading and spelling in particular. But every time he reads Corinna’s books in his lessons, he comes home with a smile on his face and great motivation.
My husband and I have seen a change in him and the school has also noticed a difference in his work. The poems have triggered something in him to read and write more and he has started to read and write in a more inspirational way. I think Corinna’s poetry books are outstanding, because I can tell from my son’s comments.
