A poem and activity from
Will the Wizard
The first of many planned Step 2 books, these books are designed to encourage the child to be less dependent on the pictures to help decode the words than at Step 1. Books at Step 2 still have illustrated poems with activities to stimulate the imagination and reinforce learning as at Step 1, but they are at a more challenging level in terms of language choice.
Will the Wizard is the first Step 2 book (ISBN 978-1-907706-01-1) available now as a 28 page full-colour paperback book. More titles to follow in the coming months. The exact date will be posted here once it is known.
Step 2 books are written and designed for age 6 - 13 and spelling age 8 - 12. These books appeal to a child, who is probably working at a lower spelling age than their actual age or interest level. The poems and illustrations, together with the accompanying fun activities, reinforce learning and help the supporting adult determine if the child can discriminate and blend sounds. These books are unique to the dyslexic book market in that they are based on spelling age rather than reading age and appeal to a broad age range.
Areas of difficulty to look out for:
* Does the child guess at a word, looking at the whole word or just the initial letter?
* Does he/she forget how to read or spell a word as soon as he/she has turned the page?
* Can he/she find it hard to sound out individual letters in simple 3 letter words e.g. cat, bat?
* Does the child find it hard to rhyme simple words?
* Does he/she skip little words, such as and, the?
* Does he/she miss out words when reading?
Dancing Kites Creative Learning books are designed to address these areas of difficulty and help develop key reading and spelling skills, with the help of a supporting adult. This person can be a parent or carer. He or she does not need to be an educational specialist.
